What is a QR code tattoo?

A QR code tattoo is body art that encodes a web address. A static tattoo permanently encodes its final destination; a dynamic setup encodes one stable route that can redirect to new pages later. The visible tattoo does not change when the destination changes.

Static vs dynamic QR tattoo

A static QR permanently contains the final page URL, so a deleted social account, expired campaign or changed portfolio can make the tattoo obsolete. A dynamic QR tattoo contains a stable route instead. That route still depends on the provider and domain remaining available, but its destination can be updated without changing the ink.

Will a QR tattoo keep scanning?

It can, but no tattoo QR is guaranteed. Scan reliability depends on module size, contrast, an undisturbed quiet zone, placement, stencil accuracy, ink spread, healing and camera conditions. Print and scan the exact final design, then repeat the test on the stencil before tattooing.

There is no universal safe size because the number of modules and the skin placement both matter. Keep every module distinct, avoid tight curves, use the shortest stable URL you control and ask an experienced artist to test the stencil at final size on several phones.

Placement and body movement

Flat areas with less stretching make it easier to preserve the square grid than joints, tight curves or places that distort strongly with movement. The artist should judge the individual placement, apply the stencil at the intended size and scan it while the body is in realistic positions.

Quiet zone and error correction

The QR specification calls for a clear quiet zone four modules wide on every side. Higher error correction adds redundancy but also makes a denser symbol; it cannot compensate for a badly distorted or undersized tattoo.

A successful stencil scan is only the first checkpoint. Ink spread, scabbing, fading, sun exposure and later skin changes can affect module separation. Follow professional aftercare, avoid judging the code during early healing, then retest the healed tattoo periodically with multiple cameras.

Plan for failures outside the tattoo

Even perfect QR geometry cannot fix an expired domain, deleted page or unavailable service. Keep the encoded route short and under long-term control, maintain a basic fallback page, and avoid promises that any dynamic QR provider or web destination will operate forever.
